Maria : or, The Wrongs of Woman (Maria, ou, les injustices subies par la femme), de l'écrivain britannique Mary Wollstonecraft, est une suite romancée, inachevée, de son essai politique révolutionnaire Défense des droits de la femme (1792). Maria : or, The Wrongs of Woman est publié de façon posthume en 1798 par son mari, William Godwin, et est fréquemment reconnu comme son œuvre féministe la plus radicale[1].
Ce roman philosophique et gothique conte l'histoire d'une femme emprisonnée dans un asile d'aliénés par son mari. Il se centre sur les «torts» faits par la société à la femme généralement, plutôt qu'à une femme surtout, et critique ce que Mary Wollstonecraft considère comme l'institution patriarcale du mariage dans la Grande-Bretagne du XVIIIe siècle et le dispositif juridique qui le protège. Cependant, l'incapacité de l'héroïne à se débarrasser de ses idées romanesques condamne aussi les femmes, qui se bercent d'un sentimentalisme erroné et nuisible. Le roman est d'autre part novateur par sa célébration de la sexualité féminine, mais aussi par un sentiment d'identité comme femme qui traverse les classes sociales. D'identiques thèmes, joints à la publication du livre de William Godwin sur la vie de Mary Wollstonecradft, Memoirs of the Author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, qui fait scandale, rendent le roman impopulaire à l'époque de sa parution.
Les critiques féministes du XXe siècle adoptent le livre et l'intègrent à l'histoire du roman et des idées féministes. On y voit la majorité du temps une vulgarisation sous forme de fiction de Défense des droits de la femme, un prolongement des raisonnements féministes qu'on y trouve, ainsi qu'une autobiographie[N 1].
